The non-gradual nature of adaptive radiation

چکیده
Abstract Adaptive radiation is a major source of biodiversity. Still, many aspects this evolutionary process remain poorly understood. Our recent integrative examination the cichlid adaptive in African Lake Tanganyika provides new insights into explosive diversification. The in-depth phylogenetic comparative analysis nearly all species occurring that lake permitted us to trace patterns eco-morphological evolution throughout history and revealed it occurred non-gradual manner, form time-shifted bursts accelerated evolution. temporal pattern divergence along different axes morphological empirical support for scenario potentially unifies two popular models radiation, “early burst model” “stages model”.

15 صفحه اولPerceptual Rivalry: Reflexes Reveal the Gradual Nature of Visual Awareness
Rivalry is a common tool to probe visual awareness: a constant physical stimulus evokes multiple, distinct perceptual interpretations ("percepts") that alternate over time. Percepts are typically described as mutually exclusive, suggesting that a discrete (all-or-none) process underlies changes in visual awareness. Here we follow two strategies to address whether rivalry is an all-or-none proce...

The spectacular adaptive radiation of cichlid fish in Lake Tanganyika encompasses extensive morphological convergence and co-occurrence of ecologically similar species, forcing a reevaluation of non-equilibrium dynamics in community assembly.
متن کاملThe Adaptive Nature of Culture
The scientific study of culture is made difficult because many of its definitions are ideational in nature. This creates nervousness among material-minded anthropologists because such definitions imply that culture is ethereal, superorganic, and immaterial. This apprehension is unwarranted. Analogous to data that exists physically on the surface of recording media such as a compact disc, cultur...
